Drama " Which Star Are You From "

A countryside girl who grew up on a hillside village in Kangwon-do is later found out to be the daughter of a rich family in Kangnam. How lucky! Overnight she has realized every person’s fantasy. But is she really happy? Is she truthfully happy? The goal of this drama is to show how characters that seem like they would never be able to truly communicate with each other start to look at the world from inside the other person’s shoes; the process of how they face difficulties with each other but learn to understand and communicate; the process of how they heal their pain and find themselves. And finally of how they discover in a fun and touching way that everyone in the world, including themselves, can be a hero. Whether you have a lot or not, whether you had a great education or not, whether you’re old or young, whether you have found true love or not...life can still be so lonely and tiring. Becoming an adult means opening yourself to others by finding out that life’s lonely journey isn’t only about you. Those who know this are the ones that can taste the true happiness of love. In the end, everyone’s happiness comes from within their own heart. Our wish is that all people living in this desolate and gray civilization will be able to feel true warmth and happiness spreading through their hearts.

Report: Parks shut down drop-tower rides after teen loses feet

Story Highlights• Drop-tower thrill rides shut down at parks across the country, the AP reports• Girl's feet were severed on ride at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville• Girl, 13, undergoes surgery, park spokeswoman says• Ride drops passengers 154 feet at 54 mph, stopping 20 feet above pavement
Adjust font size:
(CNN) -- A teen who lost her feet in an accident at a Kentucky amusement park has undergone surgery, a park spokeswoman said Friday, while two park operators closed similar rides around the country.
The Superman Tower of Power at Louisville's Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom was shut down after Thursday's accident, and Six Flags spokeswoman Wendy Goldberg said Friday the company closed similar rides at parks in St. Louis, Missouri; Gurnee, Illinois; and near Washington, D.C., as a precaution, The Associated Press reported.
There had been no reports of injuries on the ride before Thursday, Goldberg told AP. "Millions of people have safely ridden this ride in our parks," Goldberg said.
Another park operator, Cedar Fair Entertainment Co., closed drop rides at Kings Island near Cincinnati, Ohio; Canada's Wonderland in Toronto, Ontario; Kings Dominion in Doswell, Virginia.; Carowinds, in Charlotte, North Carolina; and Great America in Santa Clara, California, the AP reported.
"We're going to keep these things down until we're certain it's safe," Cedar Fair spokesman Craig Ross told the AP. "We'll wait and see."
Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom spokeswoman Carolyn McLean said she has been in touch with the injured 13-year-old girl's family and believed the girl is still receiving treatment at the University of Louisville Hospital.
Hospital spokeswoman Julie Gordon would not discuss details of the surgery or recovery, citing patient privacy.
The girl's name was not released because she is a minor.
The girl's feet were completely amputated just below the ankle Thursday afternoon while riding the Superman Tower of Power at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville.
Her feet were recovered by Six Flags staff and were sent to the hospital with her, McLean said.
During the Tower of Power ride, passengers are hoisted aloft, suspended momentarily, then pulled down, according to the park's Web site. Passengers -- secured with bars and seat belts but with arms and legs free -- drop 154 feet at 54 mph, stopping "just 20 terrifying feet above the pavement," the Web site says.
A police dispatcher said a cord wrapped around the girl's feet while she was on the ride.
"I seen the car go up. Then, like, the cable broke ... and I heard a lot of people screaming," Chris Stinnett, who was at a ride next to the Tower of Power, told CNN affiliate WDRB/WMYO-TV in Louisville.
"The cable went under the car -- and I seen it pull up and hit a lot of people -- and I seen them bring their legs up," he said. (Watch witnesses describe the accident )
"We are not confirming that happened," McLean said. "There was a lot of misinformation from witnesses."
The ride will remain closed until a full investigation by state officials and "our team of experts" is conducted, McLean said.
The inspectors will interview staff members, witnesses and speak with the girl and her family, she said.
"Every ride, every investigation is different," she said.
The rest of the park was operating as normal on Friday.

'Teach For America' strives for educational equality

Story Highlights• Program founded in 1989 to be an educational version of the Peace Corps
• Applicants pledge two years as a teacher, but don't have to have education degree
• Many former program members continue to work in education
More on CNN TV: Watch for more "People You Should Know" features on "Paula Zahn Now," at 8 p.m. ET Tuesdays.
Adjust font size:
(CNN) -- This year, 18,000 of America's top college graduates competed for spots teaching in some of the poorest areas of the United States.

Only one in six will be picked for the Teach For America program, which is trying to bring educational equality to struggling school districts.

"Our country aspires so admirably to be a place of equal opportunity and yet where you are born still in our country does so much to determine your educational prospects," says 39-year-old Wendy Kopp, the founder of Teach For America.

Her immediate goal is to place the nation's top college graduates in 26 of the nation's poorest public school systems. Her secondary goal is to grow by extending it to serve many more communities.

Teach For America recruits people of all academic majors, with widely different career interests, who sign up to teach for two years. After that, most stay in education, and others try to effect changes in educational programs through community leadership, Kopp says.

According to the Teach For America Web site, only half of the 13 million children growing up in poverty graduate from high school.

"What makes it so unconscionable is the knowledge -- and we see this everyday in the communities where we work -- that when kids in rural and urban areas are given the opportunity they deserve, they excel," Kopp tells CNN.

Kopp dreamed up the idea for Teach For America while planning her senior thesis at Princeton in 1989. She tells CNN she was so enthusiastic about her plan she wrote a letter to President Bush calling for him to take her proposal and make the organization the Peace Corps of the 1990s.

But the letter apparently ended up in the wrong White House office.

"I got a job rejection," she says.

That only inspired her to work harder. She found government grants and chased large companies for donations. Initially she was able to place 500 teachers.

In the program's 18 years, more than 14,000 people have joined TFA and about two-thirds are still full-time teachers or involved in education.

Kopp says she is inspired by the number of "alumni" who are taking leadership positions "in the broader effort to expand educational opportunity."

Things have not always been good at Teach For America. In an article in the November 27 issue of Fortune magazine, Kopp described the hard times after the initial seed money ran out. But in 2000, Gap founder Don Fisher gave TFA an $8.3 million grant (contingent on it being matched). Between other heavy hitting investors and more fundraising TFA raised nearly $17 million more, according to the Fortune article.

Also, federal support recently has grown, thanks in part to help from first lady Laura Bush.

Nicole Hallarman, a history major who graduated from Yale, tells CNN she was inspired to join Teach For America after reading Kopp's book, "One Day, All Children: The Unlikely Triumph of Teach For America and What I Learned Along The Way."

Hallarman says she wants to see test scores improve at the school she will work at in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. She said she plans to continue in education after her two-year commitment is up.

"I want my first-graders to be the best first-graders my school has seen."

WHY IMMERSION TEACHING WORKS Words

WHY IMMERSION TEACHING WORKS Words
Frequency
Index

As a Canadian immersion teacher, I was enthused to see the letter from John Whelpton about the Canadian immersion experience (South China Morning Post, June 11). I would like to take this opportunity to expand upon and challenge some of his views.

I agree that the Canadian immersion and bilingual schools have been successful in producing functionally bilingual students. In the province of Manitoba, there are French, Ukrainian, and German immersion schools; Hebrew bilingual schools; and a school for native Indian students. English immersion programmes are popular for students from the province of Quebec as well as from countries such as Libya and Japan. However, Mr Whelpton's suggested condition that teachers in these schools must be fully bilingual may be unnecessary. For example, primary teachers can and do function with a smaller vocabulary than secondary teachers.

Secondly, it is doubtful that students will use English because they ''understand and accept the objective of making English the language of the classroom'' which is a rather sterile motive. One reason that Canadian immersion programmes work is because of the commitment to Whole Language Learning, that is, children learn a language, (first or second), by using it to transmit or receive meaningful messages that are interesting, real and important.

They want to make their needs and desires known and to understand the world around them. Immersion programmes integrate language and content in an activity-based, child-centred manner so that the child is motivated to use the second language as a tool to transmit and receive messages related to social and academic interests. In addition the second language is modelled throughout the school, is encouraged and rewarded, and thus becomes the language of choice. It is not necessary to ''abandon'' Cantonese; an immersion programme should provide some daily instruction in the first language.

Mr Whelpton's third argument that all the students in one class need to be at approximately the same level of English proficiency when they switch to English is unrealistic and unprofitable. How does a teacher group children who have a huge vocabulary but poor grammar skills and others who have correct grammar but a poor vocabulary?

Also, suppose the students have similar language abilities but different learning styles! The odds are that a teacher, at any point in time, will be teaching at a level that is too difficult for one-third, too easy for one-third and appropriate for the final one-third of the students. Hence the concept of Co-operative learning : students in heterogeneous groups with a mixture of personalities, talents and weaknesses (a more realistic reflection of life) learn better as they co-operate, instead of compete, and depend on each other for support and information.

This type of learning environment frees the teacher from the traditional lecturing mode in favour of circulating, monitoring and challenging the students to make use of their different experiences to expand their knowledge and skills.

I support immersion programmes not simply so that Hong Kong remains ''competitive as an international business centre'', but because children who learn a second language partake in an educational experience that expands their horizons in addition to their cognitive, social and affective capabilities; important goals of education indeed.

Net English Final Exam

1. Describe my chatting experiences with my peers.
Although I have been chatting in MSN and Yahoo Messanger for many years, but this was the first time get 6 people to chat together. There are 6 people in our group, 3 live in college accommodation, I live in outside of college and 2 live in other places.
We were meeting together by accident, at the time I saw that there were 5 of us on line, but we did not chat with each other, just doing own work. Suddenly I thought “we have to do chatting work by chatting room for our net English class.” Than I tried to write the first sentence for each of them: “should we do chatroom with the members now?”
There were 4 of us by the computer, 1 was off line, another one was washing clothes. We had been waiting for about 20 minutes to get all of us arrived by computer.
First we had to find a topic for the chatting. We decided to discuss about our business oral speaking report. Also we had to find a topic for the report too.
We decided to talk about fast food, and than we said out some different fast food restaurants, such as KFC, McD, SUBWAY, and Burger King.
Finally we voted to decide reporting KFC
We were chatting about 1 hour, and there were many joke and funny things happened during the chatting. For example: when Andy Huang said “KFC or McDxxxx which is bigger, at the time I just thought about the size and answered “KFC”, but after few sentences chatting, I realize what had happened. Every body was laughing for a long time.
I think we have done the great job in the chatting, because 6 of us in 4 different places but we could talk together and finished our first part report work, so I think the chat room bring convenient and take short distance for people.
Although in the blog chat room section we only read in English, actually we had talking in Chinese even some blue words. We cut about half of our chatting content. So that why were chatting more then 1 hour.
“FROM NOW ON NO MORE ENGLISH!!!” this sentence is the end in the chatting. So we should have more chance to practice English and chat.
So MSN and Yahoo Messenger are not only offer places for people to chat or do work also they are support good opportunity for us to learn English together. So we should use it properly

2. describe my blog and my blogging experiences.
My blog is called rain and rain. I love rain very much since I was a child. I liked to paddle water with my yellow PVC boots in rainy day. In the first net English class the taught to do blog, I thought the blog will put a lot of my things. I have been collection rubber boots and rain suits for many years, also I have got about 70 pairs of rubber boots and 100 rain suit. They are from many different countries and some of them were made in 20 years and made by hand. I wanted put their information and pictures on this blog, so I called the blog rain and rain. So far I have not put any thing about my collection, but I will start to put them on the blog in winter vocation.
So far there are 12 sections in my bolg. In the introduction I wrote about my family, past job, studying in the UK and want to do in the future. Dictionary part I put 5 English dictionary websites, they are easily to find English online dictionary, also in the English learning section I found 5 very useful website to learn English. In the movie and music section I find preview spider man 3 clap. Beatles is my favorite band, so I put the yellow submarine song in the part, also I found the KTV video for the song, it has subtitle on the screen, so people can not only listen to the song also can sing it on the same time. Hot potato is a very good and useful skill for me, because this can help me to make exam paper for my student to fill the word in the gap. Reviewing website described about the website I found and put in my blog. Chatroom is a very interesting work, we were chatting on the same time but in different places, also there are many funny things happen during the chatting. I put some pictures in the photo section, the pictures are taken in the foreign countries when I studied and traveled in abroad. “An event that changed my life” is talking about my life different between I went to the UK before and after I come back from the UK.
In the blog, the most difficult is putting words together with the picture. But I will find the method to do it, when I match words with picture together that can let readers understand more information about the pictures. In the blog I just has basic skill to put information and pictures, so I need to find and learn more skill to make a wonderful blog to attract people to enjoy reading it.
Even I have not put any thing about my collection in the blog, but I learnt a lot of things to do blog. Before studying the class, I did not know where I could make my own blog and how to design it. Now I got a place to do it. Also learnt how to connection others USL in my blog, it let me easier to reach their website. I hope I will learn more skill to do my blog in next term.

An Important Event That Changed My Life - Went To The UK

What will happen in next second? No body can know. If you do something special, life can be different and full of surprises. I had worked in the Farmer Association for seven years since 1990. Even though the work was very easy to do and well paid. I did the same thing every day for while. It was real boring then I thought “will I sit here for my whole life?”
I quit my job when I was thirty years old and then went to the UK. I started to study English in England. I met people from over the world and get to know different cultures from them. The different cultures made me love traveling, so far I have been to more than fifteen different countries.
After learning English from language school, I applied to a fish farming course in Shetland. There were 25000 people living on the island. In winter the sky gets dark at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. And light at 9 o’clock in the morning. Also, the weather is much cooler than in Taiwan. I was the only person from Taiwan. There were only 4 students in my class, 3 English young boys and me, so in the class I always got in trouble with my English, but the classmates and teachers were very kind to me, especially tow of my teachers who were absolutely patient to teach me. I will never forget them. I still chat with the two teachers by MSN even though I left Shetland 5 years ago. They are the best teachers I have had so far. I am kind and patient to my little students just like the two teachers were kind and patient with me.
After coming back to Taiwan, I get an English teaching job in a cram school. I really enjoy teaching and playing with children. The job made me go back to college to earn more English.
I really had a wonderful time when I was in the UK. If I did not go to the UK; I would still sit in the office doing the same boring job. I would not meet such excellent teachers, I would not go back to college, becoming a student again, and would not meet so many young classmates for my friends. It might change my life again after graduate from the college.

Beatels yellow submarine
Lyric:
In the town where I was born
Lived a man who sailed to sea
And he told us of his life
In the land submarines
So we sailed up to the sun
Till we found the sea of green
And we lived beneath the waves
In our yellow submarine
We all live in our yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, Yellow submarine
We all live in our yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, Yellow submarine
And our friends are all on board
Many more of them live next door
And the band begins to play
We all live in our yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, Yellow submarine
We all live in our yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, Yellow submarine
as we live a life of ease
Everyone of us has all we need
Sky of blue and sea of green
In our yellow submarine
We all live in our yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, Yellow submarine
We all live in our yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, Yellow submarine
We all live in our yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, Yellow submarine
We all live in our yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, Yellow submarine

The Conrad Tokyo

THE ROOMS There are two types of rooms — Garden Rooms and City Rooms — which face either Tokyo Bay and the Hamarikyu gardens, or the city skyline of Tokyo. Inside, the rooms are flush with zebrawood — an elegant wood with a dense, pin-striped grain pattern — which covers most surfaces of the entrance hallway, closet doors and bathroom doors. Amenities such as a 37-inch plasma television, mechanized shades that control the spectacular views, and the hotel's pillow menu — a selection of pillows of varying firmness — ensure that guests are pampered thoroughly.
